Solid wood vs. plywood vs. particleboard

These materials serve different purposes. Understanding where each is used is more useful than judging a cabinet from one label.

Different materials belong in different cabinet components.

A cabinet is a system, not a single material. Door frames, face frames, drawer boxes, cabinet boxes, backs, shelves, and panels may be made differently to balance strength, stability, finish, and value.

Solid wood

Commonly used for face frames, door frames, and drawer components. It offers strength and natural character, but expands and contracts with environmental changes.

What to notice: continuous natural grain, traditional joinery, and the way solid wood is used selectively in frames, doors, and drawers.

Plywood

Layers of wood veneer bonded in alternating directions create a stable sheet material commonly used for cabinet boxes, backs, shelves, and panels.

What to notice: multiple thin veneer layers along the exposed edge and a smooth wood-veneer face across the panel.

Particleboard

Compressed wood particles and resin form a consistent panel used in many furniture and cabinet products. Performance depends on density, coating, hardware, load, and moisture exposure.

What to notice: a dense, uniform particle core beneath a smooth coated face—different from plywood’s distinct veneer layers.

Broad labels can be misleading. Compare the box, back, shelves, face frame, doors, drawer boxes, and finished panels separately.
